UI Weavings

Rafaël Rozendaal works in a incredibly diverse number of mediums and tends to mix them with one another from time to time. These works simply referred to as “weavings” on his portfolio website embody that principle. They are these unique, physical weavings that pull inspiration from the digital world. Rather than weaving text, pattern, or images, Rozendaal instead creates unique arrangements of squares and rectangles in a slew of vibrant colors. The way in which he composes the weaving strongly resembles the layout of the windows on a computer screen with different blocks of color making up different UI elements, buttons, borders, or pieces of content. Not only is it interesting and special because of its use of such a physical and handmade medium representing digital content, but it also does an amazing job of suggesting the subject matter just enough that the viewer gets it without completely giving it away. They act as a sort of abstract, reduction of what we recognize as a computer screen and we’re able to quickly recognize it even thought it lacks any real content.
